In February 2007 the Department of Homeland Security announced that the Richmond metropolitan statistical area had received the designation of an Urban Area Security Initiative. UASI Program funds address the unique planning, equipment, training, and exercise needs of high-threat, high-density Urban Areas, and assist them in building an enhanced and sustainable capacity to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism.
The Central Virginia UASI is comprised of the following jurisdictions:
