DHS Announces $113 Million for National Preparedness Training Initiatives
The Department of Homeland Security awarded $84 million under the Homeland Security National Training program and $29 million under the Competitive Training Grants Program to universities and private industry across the country including a Virginia company. The CNA Corporation based in Alexandria was awarded almost $5 million to “assist State and local officials to build and sustain a risk management (RM) capability within their jurisdictions. The report concerns the issues of threat assessments, dealing with the mentally ill, and information sharing. It also focuses on some response-related issues including the preparation, revision and exercise of emergency plans and the implementation of crisis communication systems.

Virginia Tech Review Panel Delivers Report to Governor Kaine
On August 30th, 2007, Governor Kaine accepted the Report of the Virginia Tech Review Panel, which he appointed to perform an independent, thorough, and objective review of the tragic events on April 16 at Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech Internal Review Committees Release Findings on April 16 Tragedy
On May 9, 2007, Virginia Tech President Charles Steger directed three internal reviews in the wake of the April 16 tragedy on the Virginia Tech campus. He directed the chairs "to look at strengths and weaknesses of our existing systems/infrastructure and how they may be improved or augmented to address emergency situations that might arise in the future." Announcing the Virginia Higher Education Preparedness Consortium Collab Website
The website, hosted by the University of Virginia, provides a place for members of the Virginia college community to post information, discuss research and practices, and to read what is being done at other colleges and universities.
While the new website is facilitated by the Office of the Commonwealth Preparedness and the Secretary of Technology the path the Collab site takes will be determined by the users.
